My first credit card[1] arrived yesterday. I've been thinking about my Amazon Wish List, wondering about a paid LJ account and dreaming of a digital camera.

Oh, and I'll be unemployed in about a month's time.

1. The credit card I had in university doesn't count since it was linked to my father's account and purely for emergency situations (i.e. purchase of new boots, trips to Florence and hotels in Buffalo, New York.)

Ah I'm desperate for a digital camera! Especially with all this drawing I've been doing lately it'd be nice to be able to draw from my own pictures!

But I'm broke and must not spend any money I earn as it's all going on my holiday.

I'm also thinking that the use of my credit card linked to my mother's account would be put to much better use if I too used it to pay for hotels in New York.

What about using good old-fashioned Snappy Snaps photos?

Yeah that's a good idea actually..

But I do still want one, just for holidays, nights out etc.

Might well use a black and white disposable though to take some arty pics. Guten idee dankeschon.

A five-week long holiday in Brasil is not compatible with my current job, so I quit. Too bad I'm not an IT person, otherwise I'd be sending my CV to your company. ;-)

From: [identity profile] sparklielizard.livejournal.com
That's a real shame :-( I hope nobody can fill the role and when you get back they'll take you on again!

Alas, non-IT vacancies are few and far between at my place otherwise I'd certainly recommend you :-/

They already hired someone else for my position. But, to be honest, even if it was available I wouldn't take it. The work was very mundane and repetitive admin stuff, which was driving me mad. Although I love the organisation, I really need to find a job that engages me more.

Go, ProspectUs, Go!!!

I hear you on that! Sometimes you've just got to go back home - and five weeks sounds reasonable to me. If your current workplace ain't amenable....

Yup, it looks like I'll be calling ProspectUs' permanent division. ;-)

I really want a long holiday and I new challenge afterwards, so it feels like the right thing to leave my current job.

How are things going with you? Are you back yet in London? We should meet sometime for a coffee in our neighbourhood and do some catch up.

Catch Up

Definitely!

I'm still in Oz having a hard time of it. I just want to go to sleep!

Very best wishes for your holiday. I'm so happy you're going back for a visit. xxx

That's what I'm doing. I've got 12 months of no interest, so it's just for my security while I travel in Brasil in July, then look for a job in August. It's good to have it in case of money being tight in the next couple of months.

Oh no, credit cards and upcoming unemployment are evil bedfellows.

Why are you losing your job?

Date: 2007-06-15 06:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com
No, I quit. I wasn't happy with my job (the place is lovely but my position in itself is very boring), plus I wanted five weeks in Brasil. It feels scary but also exciting to be moving on to something new.

Since my credit score literally said, "none" when I checked it, I just about lost all hope for credit. No credit is the same as bad credit here, and the only place that would give me a credit card was a credit union (a tad different from a bank) but it's a "secure" card- meaning, I'm borrowing against money I had to put up myself. I had to come up with $500 to open the account, and then borrow against it and pay it back in installments of at least $15 per month. One of my brothers did this, and in about 9 months or so of having this "secure" card, he was able to apply for an "unsecure", ie, NORMAL credit card, but at lower limits. You really have to want to get into debt to get a decent credit card and a decent percentage rate on it- :P "May I have some debt, please? Thank you so much, you're tops." bleh.

But yes, the unemployment...I may be headed in that direction soon myself- I absolutely DESPISE my current situation. I've already got my CV out there and have gotten some offers for interviews, but I'm dragging my feet. Trouble is, I know it'll just be another administrative job to keep me fed and out of the wind and rain until I can be a professional singer.

Le sigh...

What about aiming for administrative work in the music world? For an opera house, etc? At least you'll be working closer to your dream.

I'm hoping that this credit card will create a history of credit which, later on, will make it easier for me to buy a house. At least that's what everyone tells me.

That's true- I could pursue that, trouble is the most local one wouldn't pay me near what I'm making right now- I'll have to branch out and search...

And yes, having credit will make things a lot easier for you later when you go to get loans and buy things- age also has a lot to do with it too. The older you are and the more on top of your finances you are, the breaks you get as far as creditors are concerned.
