Pulsing Through My Brain

The busker in Waterloo station was playing The La's "There She Goes" this morning. I should have gone up to him and dropped a pound coin in his hat.

Memories of my friend Sue in high school, Hong Kong, So I Married an Axe Murderer, summer, sunshine, youth...

So, I married an axe murderer is my favourite film :)

I like it a lot too. Still remember laughing so much with my high school friends when we first watched it. :-)

Slowdive.

I don't understand Last FM. For years friends have used it but each time I attempt to navigate the site I just don't see its purpose. Perhaps you could enlighten me?

I am envious of all the musicians that show up (or down rather) in your subway (or tube rather) stations. In London you have remarkable musicians playing everything from Neil Young to The Beatles. Here, in New York we get experimentation that usually lacks melody; some empty plastic buckets, a Casio keyboard, and maybe a detuned guitar.

I will say that there is this Mexican band that plays on the L train heading to Brooklyn on the weekends that sound super amazing.

I've only started using Last FM. Did you ever set up an account? That's the best way to start; then you add songs from artists you like (but don't add too many - say 400! - because you then lose all of them) and end up with a personalised radio station that only plays your songs. If you add friends, you can take songs from them, or suggest tracks to them (I like to suggest only horrible songs to people - much more fun). :-)

The downside is that many artists don't have their songs available. It's OK for me because I like a lot of stuff from the 80s, so can listen to that non-stop (mostly at work).

Most musicians in your underground annoy me. They either don't know how to play, choose bad covers (I'm going to kill the next one who sings "Here Comes the Sun") or butcher classics. The best busker I ever heard was a tall, blond boy at Charing Cross station one weekend, who sang a very haunting version of Madonna's "La Isla Bonita". If I could travel back in time, I'd ask him if he had that version on CD.

Hahaha they play that song of often in that film.
But I love it and it made me love the movie even more.

argh, so*

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I grew bored of the song at one point (though I never owned a copy of it) but now it just plays full-blown nostalgia for me, which I like.

I was walking past that busker at the same time. We must have only just missed each other!

[identity profile] amberholic.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It was really, really good! I don't even like that song!

[identity profile] fisticuff-s.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
you like the L word, don't you?

[identity profile] amberholic.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I love it!

Aram was really mad at me (sort of) when he realized I only knew the Sixpence None The Richer version.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2008-07-11 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard the Sixpence None the Richer version. The busker's version was very close to the original, quite lovely.

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2008-07-11 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
To me they're nearly indistinguishable, except one's more 60s pop than the other.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2008-07-11 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm... there's something "polished" about Sixpence's version, like it was made on purpose for a TV show. Still close to the original though.

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2008-07-11 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I see what you mean. Plus, the video is puke-worthy.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2008-07-11 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
I hate videos where they mix a TV show/Film with the band. I guess it makes sense if you are struggling to be known, but in the long run I think it's kinda tacky.

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2008-07-11 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It is, but at the same time, I don't think it was a film? I can't figure out what the hell was going on in that video! Adam Goldberg seemed to be whispering to all the girls in various places to get them to go listen to the band. And then the stage fell down? What??

Let us be children of the night Nadia...

The children of the night shall inherit the earth.

[identity profile] jeffster.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
what's a busker?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)

What do you call them folks?

[identity profile] jeffster.livejournal.com 2008-07-09 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
POOR!

haha

i guess we just call them 'street performers'...kind of lumped in one category with the likes of jugglers/living statues/mimes/those who feel the need to warn us of the impending apocolypse/screamers for jesus...
