I'm loving this unemployment time off work. Yesterday, I had fun with [livejournal.com profile] kirstenlj and her son at the Museum of Childhood, followed by a dip in York Hall's pool. Today, I went to the gym[1] and spent the afternoon browsing the net (job sites, school courses, etc). I've also set up an interview with the Institut Français for next Tuesday.

I'm now thinking if I should go back to school and get some skills that are more practical and job-friendly than a MA in Portuguese Studies. I found some good info on horticulture courses but the impression I get is that they are aimed at kids straight out of school and are mostly based outside London. I've got that typical pre-February fantasy of leaving office work for good and pruning park hedges for the rest of my life.

Tonight, I'm seeing Sherlock Homes' latest adventure with an ex-colleague. Tomorrow, I'm doing volunteer work at that LGBT organisation I briefly worked for two years ago (how time flies!)

[1] My number one tip for anyone out of work is to get some exercise into your day. You benefit from the endorphins, the tension release, the routine, and the self-esteem boost of course.

I used to dream of being a horticulturist. I wanted to work at Disney World and trim hedges to look like Mary Poppins and Goofy. This still holds some appeal.

I don't know if I'd go as far as work for Disney, but if the Queen had a spare role in her Leeds Castle maze trimming team I'm so there.

exercise is a good suggestion. it is a big help to me.

i am doing some very preliminary research into going to law school. i hate how growing up kinda makes me dream small, but that's how it is.

At the same time, it's good to remind yourself that you can always change your mind and pick up something else. I always think of my mom as an example - she studied to be a lawyer, then gave it up to be a housewife and only in her late 50s decided to set up a guest house and run it (which she loves!) I think the fact that we are thinking about our dreams instead of just going with the flow is already a great thing!

I think you've got a good point there. We can do more than one thing in our lives. The point is to just get started and push ahead of the areas that excite us most! Now I just need to force myself to be disciplined about it all.

'get some exercise into your day'

that is dazzling truth! tho walks are so often pushed aside in favour of the Proper Serious eg peering at a cpu screen.
I'm going to make it a rule now! >:I

I love walks! I do them at least for an hour a day and it has a marked effect on me - as opposed to the few times I spend all day at home (and go stir crazy). Exercise is bliss.
