Brasil's largest shanty town threw its first gay pride parade yesterday. Lots of great photos here.

I'm so happy that, from what I hear, it was a large, peaceful and successful event. I'm so used to hearing about violence and crime in Rio de Janeiro - it's a nice change to see a particular neighbourhood with a bad reputation putting on an event that goes well.

damn, their first ever knocks the socks off of a lot of pride parades that i've attended. nice.

I imagine there was a lot of experience there from the other pride parades in Brasil - especially the big ones in Rio and São Paulo. Also, they must have all their background from the Carnivals to bring to the table, which helps. I'm just impressed they didn't get any grief!
