Lets add these two to our Gingerganza.

Gareth Thomas, the only current professional male athlete in a team sport who is openly gay.

Michael Fassbender, brilliant actor from films like Fish Tank, Hunger, 300 and the upcoming X-Men (he plays a young Magneto).

If you count hurling then

Still, shocking in this day and age that there are so few. I wonder why sportswomen find it slightly easier to come out (or at least there are more of them out)

Wikipedia fail! I wouldn't be surprised now if there are more than Cusack and Thomas out there.

Young kids seem to have no problem (in general) with gay people - unlike the kids of my generation - so it's hopefully all changing for the better. Countries like Brasil desperately need them to come out and continue to play and be role models - it might help end the violence against gay people that runs deep.

The wikipedia article on Thomas says "According to Sports Illustrated, Thomas is notable as the world's only current professional male athlete in a team sport who is openly gay." which is true (Sports Illustrated does say that) albeit misleading (in that there is one more -- but only one that I can find).

it's hopefully all changing for the better

I share your hope but still out of the hundreds of thousands of athletes, you'd have thought more than two gay men would step forward as role models in this day and age.

Coming out is already tough when involving just your friends and family. I can't imagine the fear and pressure when it involves your job, fans, the press, etc.

[identity profile] petercampbell.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
In Gareth Thomas' case, he only felt able to come out when the pressure of hiding his sexuality from his family and friends was making him feel suicidal. He's coming to the end of his sporting career as well, which probably made it easier on a professional level. And it's worked remarkably well for him - contrast that with Justin Fashnu's treatment just a decade earlier.

As for redheads, has anyone mentioned Rufus Hound yet??

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2011-01-12 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Don't think so - had to Google him to see who he was!

Maybe it's because a lot of lesbian stereotypes like butchness or masculinity are desirable qualities when it comes to professional sport, and the reverse is true for gay male stereotypes?

I should be the last person to be anti-redhead but I think I would have some issues with dating one of my own kind (not that I'm on the market heh). I always worry when I'm out with my brother (v similar colour to me) and Felix that people think we're trying (and failing) to breed some kind of redheaded super race.

Ooh, too many brackets.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You've never been tempted to go out with the two of them in matching outfits? :-P

[identity profile] amypops.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think my brother would go for that funnily enough...

And I didn't see Seth Green on either of your lists or comments I don't think. I vote for him :-D

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Your vote must be in the form of a sexy pic of Seth Green. Extra points if you found one of him shirtless and dripping with water.

Maybe later. I am currently busy adding up the number of service users in forensic services in settled accommodation for Lambeth PCT. Thrilling huh?!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Just think of the service users as a super army of Seth Greens wanting to take over the world.

[identity profile] amypops.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
They certainly want to take over the world. The other day one of them made a pretty convincing looking knife by taking the metal from a leaflet holder and a shoelace.

Gareth Thomas is not fdoing it for me... but then I suppose he wouldnlt want to anyway :-)

Fassbender though... he def looks promising (Note to self - google pics with less facial hair to get a closer look)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You won't be disappointed with Fassbender, but if muscle is your thing do a Google on Thomas!

[identity profile] moral-vacuum.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Gareth Thomas looks like a Sontaran from Doctor Who.

[identity profile] rosamicula.livejournal.com 2011-01-12 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm. I could do Fassbender some serious damage.

Gingers in B&W are preferable.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2011-01-12 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And in black tie.

Josh Homme from Queens of the Stoneage is my favourite ginger EVAH!!!

Thanks for including the pic of Michael Fassbender though... Woah Nelly !!!

Michael Fassbender. OMG. Too hot.
