White Lies, Ritual, 2011
If John Hughes were still alive and making movies, he'd try to slot White Lies into one of his soundtracks - especially if it were a story about surly teenagers who sit through their 6th form English Lit classes writing awkward poetry while miserable rain falls outside. Then these teenagers would run through fields and snog behind a park's abandoned music stand. It's unclear whether there'd be a happy ending.
In their first album they channeled Julian Cope to sing Echo and the Bunnymen songs. In this second album, they still have some great anthems but this time it's more Tears for Fears at their most epic or Alphaville for the ballads. They've really cornered the 80s new wave sound... which is brilliant! My favourite tracks so far: Streetlights, Bigger Than Us and Holy Ghost. Shame about the crap record cover though.
