I need to see the film again. My boyfriend and I always maintained that it was about Cruise and Kidman, and that maybe Kubrick precipitated the end of their marriage.

i am a kubrick fan, and was really disappointed by this film. underwhelmed. it seemed like a lot of hype about an extreme, risque sexual subculture which, to me, seemed pretty unimaginative. then again, maybe the illuminati is boring to me. i know tom cruise is.

I really liked the film at the time - but I felt the hype had done it disservice. It was a very academic film - I agree with the author in the first article I linked to that it feels very closed in, with tons of symbolism. I need to revisit it and see how I'd feel about it today. Its trailer seems a bit dated...

True! I went looking for their divorce date after your comment and it was about two years after the release of this film. That's a lifetime in Hollywood.
